2019 Sea to Summit Trail Marathon
The Sea to Summit trail marathon is back for its second year.
Give yourself the ultimate test and take on the trail marathon that inaugural competitors said was “…bigger than expected.” and “…possibly the hardest marathon around”.
You’ve set your personal best, come away to Melrose and set your personal worst.

Experience the full breadth of the iconic Southern Flinders Ranges by running from the waters of the Spencer Gulf across to Melrose via Mt Remarkable.
A full marathon distance, the 8am race start sees runners dipping their hands in the cold waters of Spencer Gulf before setting off on their epic journey. The 960 metre climb begins with 14 gently sloping uphill kilometres, a mix of beach, farm track, road and non-technical single track trail. This section ends at the Mambray creek campground aid station, which has a firm cutoff at 10:15am to help ensure runners will finish before dark. So far, so good. Runners then enter the hills proper and begin 22 kilometres of endless steep climbing, plunging descents or hard to navigate trackless creek line- all with minimal phone service. Commiserate with the kangaroos, emus and bird life and console yourself with the fact that this section is very remote, beautiful and that you are one of the few humans capable of accessing this unspoilt area. There are two water tanks in this section, but no other aid is available- if you want to DNF before the summit it’ll be a long wait for extraction.
So what does everyone want when they’ve slogged ~36 kilometres and 960m of elevation gain to reach the aid station at the summit of the highest mountain in the Southern Flinders? Did I hear you say a relentless 7 kilometre 600 metre descent into Melrose? Well, too bad if you don’t because this is what you’re gonna get. On the plus side, once you’re done you’ve traversed a mountain range, seen a part of Australia that few others will ever see and finished one of the hardest marathons in Australia. Pick up your medal, relax around the bonfire and tuck into hearty soups and stews with the rest of the badasses.
This race is for people who can endure. You don’t need to be fast, but you must be an good navigator who can handle discomfort. Although the course is marked as best we can if you are bad at navigating or inexperienced at the distance you should really look for another race. The Sea to Summit is not a good first marathon. Downloading Guru maps or a similar offline gps navigation app and carrying it in a smartphone is a requirement of entry into this race.

“I’m really thankful that the In the Flinders crew provided us with the opportunity to have such a memorable experience. The event was bigger in many ways than I expected, steeper hills, more wildlife, more varying and beautiful landscapes and terrain. While I was out there for a lot less time than other competitors, it was still a big day out. Many of us are after new and challenging experiences, and this ticked the box for me.”
To give an idea of the difficulty of the course note that John finished the race in an amazing 3hr 47min in the same year he won the Adelaide marathon in 2hr 33min.
